Part Two

On the Road to Autonomy

Chapter Five

New Ethnic Struggles and Political-Theoretical Transformations

During the 1980s, ethnic politics assumed a higher profile in several countries of Latin America. In Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, and Brazil, among others, concern about the implications of the region's sociocultural heterogeneity transcended the narrow milieu of scholars and specialists in a new way and became an object of interest for broader social and political sectors. Specialists, particularly anthropologists, began to review and, in some cases, revise their approaches to the ethnic-national question. This was not simply the outcome of scholarly reflections but primarily the consequence of transformations experienced by the indigenous movements in several Latin American national societies.

Indian movements have been transformed in qualitative ways, and, more important, vast ethnic conglomerates, seeking transformations at a national level, have emerged on the political scene. The transformations in question have taken various forms according to the national contexts in which have they arisen, but their common feature is the search for new articulations with political processes that go beyond the communal and regional levels and even beyond the limits traditionally observed by "ethnic" groups.
